Superintendent Michael Perry proudly poses with W&L’s A. C. Harding, winner of the Virginia High School League’s Allstate Foundation Achievement Award and Scholarship for Division 1.
A.C. was chosen among candidates statewide as the Class 1 Female Athlete of the Year! The selection committee reviewed over 200 nominations selecting a male and female in each classification(6). These students were chosen for their exemplary participation in VHSL athletics and activities, and represent the very best of Virginia’s graduating seniors. A.C. is heading to Ferrum next year where she will play volleyball(and maybe some softball). Congratulations A.C.!!!! . . . and proud parents Jackie and Ernie!!! 
The spring End of the Year Fine Arts Showcase was held May 23, 2019 at Washington & Lee High School.
The program was designed to highlight the talents of the local students and display the winning programs that won the W&L Choir and Concert Band first place trophies at the Music in the Parks in Florida. The large audience applauded each piece and enjoyed the antics of the Concert Choir as they attempted to emulate the Ike and Tina Turner rendition of “Proud Mary.” They also did another contemporary selection of the music of the group, Queen, in a “Tribute to Queen.” The Concert Band displayed expertise in the selections,” Into the Clouds,” “Homeward Bound”, “At the Crossroads”, and the rousing John Phillip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Their close precision arrangements displayed the extraordinary musicianship displayed by the young players. Senior members of both groups were recognized by the directors for their contributions to the group. Additionally, student artwork from the W&L art department was displayed around the cafeteria. The Showcase was under the direction of Mrs. Kelly Wright, Choir Director, Mr. Tyler Engel, Band Director, and Ms. Holly Ransone, Art Teacher. Mrs. King’s second grade had the pleasure of hosting Painted Lady caterpillars for the last 25 days. They were able to receive them when they were only 1 cm. long and observed them grow quickly for 10 days. After 10 days, when they were 4 cm. long, they all turned into chrysalises for another 10 days. Monday when they got to school, they had 5 beautiful butterflies! They’ve been enjoying watching them practice flying and using their proboscis (mouth) to eat nectar from flowers the class picked for them and even eating a banana! They let them free on Thursday and hope to see them around the school.

The WD 5th grade safety patrol members took a field trip to the Healthy Harvest Food Bank in Warsaw. This was the culminating activity from their first community service project. They conducted a building-wide food drive that lasted for one week. They managed to collect 756 items to take to the food bank!
Letter from WD Grandparent:
I wanted to express my gratitude and awe of one of your 3rd graders. I attended the 3rd grade field trip Wednesday to the state park with my grandson. During the nature walk I suffered an asthma attack and had to be "rescued" by the rangers & checked out by the rescue squad. Anyway, during my whole episode another 3rd grader named Chase from Mrs. Hays' class and his father stayed with me in the woods. Chase also has asthma so he let me use his inhaler. They both watched over me and offered assistance. About 2:00 p.m. we decided we needed to do something because the kids had to get back to school. Chase's dad left us and ran out of the trails to get help. Chase stayed with me and I have to say he was very brave and very helpful! He asked several times if I was ok, if I needed anything and just talked to me. When the first ranger was approaching us and we could only hear his voice Chase took a "defensive" stance beside me as to protect me from whoever was getting close. At the end of the day I'm ok, we all made it back to school and the 3rd graders had a good day. I just wanted to let you know what an awesome kid Chase is for all he did to help me thru a very scary time. And his father went above and beyond his chaperoning duties coming to my aide and getting me the help I needed. |
