March 2019 Events in Our Schools
cople elementary schoolMs. Wood's first grade class has been working on collecting, organizing and representing various forms of data in math. On Tuesday the students had to create a bar graph using data they collected from students in their class on would they rather have ice cream or a brownie.
Cople would like to recognize and give a very special thank you to Morgan Gooch, Sydney Bedford, Jaiyden Burnett, Daniel Cisneros, and Alexis Dorantes-Serrano.
These five students participated in this year’s Future Problem Solving Scenario Writing competition. Even though these students impressively wrote creative and futuristic stories, it was their excitement and dedication to the process that stood out the most. We are pleased to announce that Sydney Bedford’s story placed second in the state of Virginia. Additionally, her story has been selected to move on to the international competition. Let’s be sure to congratulate her, as well as the rest of the students when you see them. Montross Middle SchoolThese are students in Ms. Beale's and Mrs. Nelson's 6th grade inclusion science class . They are collaborating in small groups to build complex projects using circuit kits.
On Friday, March 1st, students who met their benchmark targets for reading, math, history, and science earned the opportunity for a little fun and games. Students were divided into teams and played some pretty challenging minute-to-win-it games. Here 6th graders are racing the clock using chopsticks to sort Fruit Loops. At the conclusion, all of the students enjoyed an ice cream sandwich and a drink!
Here we have another proud 6th grader showing off his completed circuit project, which converts electrical energy into sound and light.
The excited audience shouted and clapped enthusiastically when the Montross Middle School’s 7th and 8th grade concert bands held a Pre- Festival Concert on February 28, 2019. Far exceeding the expectations of the crowd, murmurs of appreciation could be heard from the audience as the bands tackled difficult musical pieces. Led by Bruce Passaretti, MMS band director, the 7th grade band members began the concert with the lively American Spirit March. Their mastery of the difficult piece was given long sustained applause by the large audience. The second selection, Sakura, a traditional Japanese folk song, featured the percussion and wind sections. Finally, the third musical number, Armory, closed out the impressive 7th grade Concert Band’s portion of the program.
The 8th grade Concert Band followed with three selections; Battle Creek March, Gently Touch the Sky, and Andromeda Overture. Again, the students’ talent was evident in each selection. Eighth grader, Jackson Sichol, was featured in a trumpet solo in the beautiful Andromeda Overture. washington district elementaryThere were lots of “Harry Potter’s” with glasses and robes, little kittens, characters from “Frozen,” workmen, animals, fairy princesses, and tons of mice. The Washington District Elementary School teachers joined their small students in the celebration of reading on March 1 and the annual Reading Character Parade. The kindergarten instructors stood out in their colorful replication of Crayola crayons. Everyone in costume carried a book that they represented in their “Favorite Book” parade. Lining up in the festive hallways, characters were cheered by other students that observed the parade as they marched through the hallways.
This year a contingent of student athletes and cheerleaders from W&L High School joined the students prior to the parade. Teams of two were led by the classes “most improved readers” to various classrooms. The classes were read to by the enthusiastic older students who enjoyed their time answering questions and reading to the youngsters. |
