Truancy
The Westmoreland County Public Schools’ school board policy explicitly states, “Each parent/guardian or person having control or charge of a child within the compulsory attendance age shall be responsible for such child’s regular and punctual attendance at school as required under provisions of the law.”
Any student, who has excessive absences, falls under the same truancy regulations as other truant students. When a student has poor attendance, has become truant, and the issue cannot be settled between the school and the student, the juvenile court system will be used to remedy the situation. This can result in court costs, fines, jail for the parents/guardians, and/or detention for the child.
Every effort is made to resolve truancy issues at the school level. Students and parents will be asked to sign an attendance contract and come to school as required. It is the responsibility of the parent and the student to make a concentrated effort to avoid truancy issues.
