Dear Parents and Students:

We welcome you to Westmoreland County Schools for the 2011-12 School Year. I, as your new Superintendent together with our teachers, administrators, and staff extend our promise to make this a year filled with excitement, challenges and successes! As our students set forth to master the academic challenges of their new grade level, we invite parents, families, and members of the community to join us in providing the continuous support which will contribute to the added exhilaration and success of the 2011-12 year.

I look forward to meeting many parents and community members at sporting events, school programs, and extra-curricular happenings. It is our goal to provide a safe, healthy, warm and friendly atmosphere for our students and staff so that families look forward to visiting us both during and after the school day. Our students and teachers appreciate knowing they always have the community cheering them on, ready to extend assistance to motivate our students toward the highest levels of achievement. 

Here in Westmoreland we offer a wealth of opportunities for students to excel academically and to develop talents through a variety of extra-curricular activities. You will find dedicated and committed teachers who value the arts and realize the importance of student participation in an enhanced array of cultural offerings. We stress an inclusion style of classes and services for students with special needs and we are particularly proud of our increased parent involvement in our programs such as our program for the English Language Learner (ELL). Finally, as our mission statement indicates, we remain very student centered as we move through the school year and adjust our programs to assure a positive impact upon student achievement and sound development.

Again, we are delighted to have you back for another year and to welcome students and families who may be new to Westmoreland County Schools. I have the tremendous expectation that families, community members, and educators working together will foster the development of the most admirable qualities of citizenship in our students.

Superintendent Named

Dr. Rebecca S. Lowry, Assistant Superintendent for Chichester School District in Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, has been named Superintendent of Westmoreland County Public Schools, effective July 1, 2011.  Dr. Lowry, a native of Virginia, worked nineteen years in the Bedford, Virginia school district. She received her BA from Bluefield College, MS and Ed.S. from Radford University, and her Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.

Dr. Lowry began her career as a school psychologist and a special education teacher in Bedford County. She has extensive experience in supervision and administration.  Additionally, Dr. Lowry has taught college and graduate courses for special education teachers at Wright State University (OH), University of Dayton (OH), Averett  College (VA), Virginia Western Community College, and Dabney-Lancaster Community College (VA).

Dr. Lowry and her husband, Richard, will bring their pet dogs with them as they make their new home in Westmoreland County this summer.
