School and Division Report Cards
As part of the Virginia's Standards of Learning accountability program, the Virginia Department of Education provides online report cards for schools and school divisions, designed to inform the public of the progress of schools in raising student achievement and enhancing the learning environment. Online report cards for schools and school divisions include data on student achievement by grade, subject and student subgroup and information on other key indicators of school quality.
School Improvement
No Child Left Behind requires schools to meet adequate yearly progress (AYP) goals each year in reading and mathematics. Schools receiving Title I funds that do not make AYP for two or more consecutive years in the same subject area are identified as being in School Improvement.
Public School Choice (PSC)
Under No Child Left Behind, all students enrolled in a Title I school in School Improvement have the opportunity to enroll in a school not designated for School Improvement. This transfer option is known as Public School Choice. For the 2011-2012 school year, Westmoreland County is not able to offer Public School Choice, as both elementary schools are in School Improvement and other choice options are unavailable.
Supplemental Educational Services (SES)
Under No Child Left Behind, some students who attend a Title I school in Year 2 of School Improvement and beyond may be eligible to receive Supplemental Educational Services. This term refers to free tutoring offered in addition to the instruction a child receives from his/her teachers. This tutoring takes place outside the regular school day, such as after school, and may be provided at the school, the student’s home, or a community location. This tutoring may be offered face-to-face and/or online. Eligible students are those from low-income families. When the demand for Supplemental Educational Services exceeds the funds available, priority is given to low-income students with the greatest academic need. For the 2011-2012 school year, Supplemental Educational Services are being offered at both Cople Elementary and Washington District Elementary.
Supplemental Educational Services (SES) are provided by employees of private companies (SES providers) approved by Virginia. A list of all approved providers for Westmoreland County may be accessed by clicking on this link: Approved Providers.
