School Delays and Closings

How Decisions are Made

The Central Office team does their very best to make decisions regarding delayed openings or school closings as early as possible.  Road checks begin very early in the morning, and there is communication/collaboration with the Virginia Department of Transportation and the local Sheriff’s Office.

Sometimes the decision will be made to initially announce a delayed opening, and then to change the delayed opening to a closing if conditions do not improve sufficiently in a short amount of time.  Decisions are weighed very carefully, with the safety of all students, faculty and staff an utmost priority.

How Decisions are Communicated

As soon as a decision is made to delay opening, dismiss early or close school due to inclement weather, all of the following radio stations, television stations and websites are notified, so that the information can be announced.  Additionally, all parents are alerted through the division’s instant messaging system.

Tips for Parents

1)  When inclement weather threatens, stay tuned to local radio and
      television stations for school-related announcements;

2)  Whenever a delayed opening is announced, stay tuned to see if the
     delayed opening will be changed to a closing;

3)  Always have a plan for your children in the event of an early
     dismissal, delayed opening or closing.
