GEAR UP Students Visit College of William and Mary

As part of their ongoing exploration on Virginia schools, twenty-four
GEAR UP students visited the College of William and Mary on June 1. The students toured the beautiful
campus with stops at the freshman dormitory and several classrooms. The tour was led by two rising W&M
seniors. After the tour, the
students met with the admission Dean who explained the process of application
to them. Last year, 12,000
students applied for 2,600 freshmen slots. The Dean explained that now is the time for them to begin
putting together their portfolios.
She mentioned how important community involvement is, in addition to
superb grades and test scores. Interestingly, the Dean noted that the College
of William and Mary accepts both the ACT and the SAT tests.
After
the tour, the GEAR UP students spent a few hours at Bush Gardens. Each of the students had earned the
right to go with a combination of scores from school attendance, increase in
grade point, and participation in the GEAR UP program.
